The mission of the Gulf Coast Section SEPM (GCSSEPM) is to "promote the science of stratigraphy in the Gulf Coast states through research in paleontology and sedimentary petrology, especially as it relates to petroleum geology."
The Houston Geological Society was formally chartered on August 8, 1923 with 74 geologists in and near Houston and all were elected charter members of the Society. Membership today is near 4,300 members.
The Lafayette Geological Society indirectly traces its history back to the founding of the South Louisiana Geological Society in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1934. At this time, there were approximately five geologists in the Lafayette area.
